Abdel J. "A.J." Fernandez is a Cuban-born blender and manufacturer who built one of Estelí's largest independent operations. He was born in March 1979 in San Luis, Pinar del Río. His grandfather Andres ran a small Cuban factory and brand called San Lotano; his father Ismael worked in Cuban tobacco, then left in the mid-1990s to farm with his cousin Nestor Plasencia in Nicaragua. A.J. followed in 2003, leaving Cuba on a family visit and staying. He started as a contract blender: catalog cigars such as Man O' War and Diesel, plus early work for Rocky Patel and Espinosa lines including 601 and Murciélago. He bought a farm in Estelí and named it San Lotano after the family marca.
His own consumer brands came later. San Lotano returned as an A.J. line around 2010. New World (2014), blended with his father Ismael, became the volume face of the house. Enclave, Last Call, Bellas Artes, and related limiteds followed. Production sits at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez / San Lotano in Estelí, with a second factory in Ocotal acquired in 2016 (a former Oliva plant). He grows leaf in Estelí, Condega, Jalapa, and other Nicaraguan regions. Who makes A.J. Fernandez cigars? He does, in his own factories, from a mix of estate and purchased tobacco.
The other half of the business is blending for other companies. Foundation Tabernacle and Olmec-era cigars are the boutique example. With Rafael Nodal and Altadis U.S.A. he has blended Nicaraguan projects for Montecristo (NC), Trinidad Espiritu, H. Upmann (NC), Hoyo de Monterrey (NC)'s La Amistad, and Nicaraguan Aging Room. Other clients on this graph include Dunbarton, Rojas, and La Palina. He is not STG, and he is not a logo on someone else's floor.
